Yes and No and/or Yes or No layers the letters of its title together to form a visual puzzle: The reductionist Lowercase Components boils each lowercase character down to its basic angular components: Extreme calligraphic explorations on individual letters are pretty too: See all of Auerbach's work in the full gallery. The Get Up DadsSeptember 3 2009. The no longer young Get Up Kids are on tour! Long ago, somewhere between Korn's creation of the White-Suburban-Boy-With-Father-Issues genre and Limp Bizkit's mass diarrhea upon our collective eardrums, The Get Up Kids were rocking out their infectious brand of emo music the kids loved so much. But not emo in the way the kids today understand it. Emo in the way you write songs about holding hands with your secret crush. It wasn't about depression and despair - it was about positivity and wearing your heart on the sleeve of your sweater vest! Less Dracula, more Maria von Trapp! One time I tried to explain what emo was and it ended up looking like this: Purists like to one-up each other and refer to increasingly obscure bands (they now hate) who actually defined emo music. The earlier and more obscure the band, the better. That, and the proper definition of "emo". Apparently it's short for "emotive", not "emotional" and this distinction is really important anyone who thinks otherwise is just a jumper of bandwagons. Well fuck 'em. I like my bandwagon and I'm going to see a bunch of old guys who think they're kids on the 18th. This is what I look likeAugust 6 2008. When drawing significant others, both the subject and the artist are put in awkward positions. The artist risks offending the subject should the rendering of certain prominent features sensitive to the subject be exaggerated. Consider:
Likewise, the subject risks offending the artist should the artist pour their soul into the work and receive only a confused look, or worse - a teary reception. It's a fine line to walk, and thankfully Emiko and I escaped the situation unscathed. I think this is about as accurate as a portrait can be: Julien BretonApril 8 2008. As far as I'm concerned, French artist Julien Breton is doing what most taggers only wished they could do. His light caligraphy is absolutely stunning as well. I just love the planes: Now go back to the woods and find those paint markers and sketchbooks you ditched because you thought the cops were going to bust up you and your crew and get writing again. Any Ghosts who would aid and Abet on a Quest might know what I'm talking about. The aristocrats joke of foley artistsAugust 1 2007. A foley artist is the sound engineer in a movie or television show. Their job is to fill the audio landscape of the production with everyday sounds - doors closing, feet stepping, and grown men screaming. The Wilhelm Scream is a sound used by foley artists as an inside joke. It's embedded in over 130 movies, and you've most likely heard it in the Star Wars or Indiana Jones movies. The Wilhelm Scream is completely different than A Wilhelm Scream, which is a fantastic band on tour with Strung Out this summer. Awesome song titles include "Me vs. Morrissey in the Pretentious Contest", "Less Bright Eyes, More Deicide", and "The Kids Can Eat a Bag of Dicks". Etsuko IchikawaApril 25 2007. Artist Etsuko Ichikawa creates "pyrographs" by imprinting molten glass onto paper and leaving an impression of the piece. I saw her current show at the 4Culture gallery downtown yesterday, and it is totally awesome. What's got me scratching my head is: would this process be considered drawing, printmaking, or glasswork? Or is pyrography its own category? Her name rhymes with vageenaOctober 28 2006. Regina Spektor performed a free show at Easy Street Records last night. What impressed me was her live vocal range. Usually singers will hit the high notes on their album, but puss out at a live show and stay in one safe octave. Spektor hit the high notes in Us and held the weird staccato voice in Fidelity. What was annoying as all hell was her cuteness. She doesn't do cute like Bjork (Everey-ting ees myewzik! One time? I looked in my tummy? But nutting was dere!), but she's not far off. I don't blame it on her though. I blame her fans. A girl standing next to me kept rolling her eyes and saying "Ooooooh, she's so cute! I just love her!" For fuck's sake, she's just a singer. That response should be reserved for pugs dressed in Darth Vader costumes. Regardless though, I figure this adulation is helping reinforce the cycle of cuteness:
As the carefully crafted image explains, a performer ('gina, Bjork, Tori, etc.) will do something cute or lovable. The crowd will ooh and aah, encouraging the performer to do more cute stuff. This is not unlike a microphone feedback loop that eventually rises to a deafening pitch. But instead of the artist producing a deafening pitch, the artist produces shit like Cvalda. We must destroy this cycle of cuteness before it destroys us. Scott J. MorganAugust 29 2006. Seattle artist Scott J. Morgan is showing at Victrola for a few days, and will be showing at Zeitgeist for all of November. Seeing the paintings on his site is no match for seeing them in real life. They're tan-fastic, so if you're in the area, take a gander. Get your geometry onAugust 15 2006. Circles are Awesome was listed as #7 on Yahoo!'s THE 9 today. Huzzah! Yahoo!'s use of the exclamation point drives me crazy. It feels so wrong putting an apostrophe-ess after it. Not only does it crash grammar checkers, it also sets a precedent for other companies to use wacky-zany-coo-coo punctuation in their names. Look forward to:
Maybe the next step is to make like the-artist-formerly-known-as-Prince and transcend letters entirely. Henceforth, windowseat will be known as (_!_) The 9th element of hip hopJune 18 2006. I recently learned there are at least five unaccounted elements of hip hop. Traditionally, there are the four elements:
Apparently there are more. I've learned the ninth, and I'm on a quest to find the rest:
